Fragmentos de piteado (Fragments of Piteado)

These works are inspired by piteado, a traditional Mexican embroidery technique used to decorate leather with intricate geometric, floral, and animal motifs. The process involves punching holes in the leather and threading pita, a natural fiber derived from the agave plant. I am a descendant of a piteado artisan.

Drawing from the piteado process as researched through oral histories documented in the states of Morelos and Jalisco as well as my own family’s history, I translate and adapt the piteado visual language through woodcut, dry pigment screenprinting, embroidery, and natural pigments. Through these materials and methods, I reclaim and reinterpret this craft and its legacy to carry forward tradition, while also mending and reweaving familial ties.
