Patrones para sanar (Patterns for Healing)

These works are inspired by piteado, a traditional Mexican embroidery technique used to decorate leather with intricate geometric, floral, and animal motifs. The process involves punching holes in the leather and threading pita, a natural fiber derived from the agave plant. I am a descendant of a piteado artisan.

The geometric piteado patterns in these works are visually structured using compositional elements inspired by paper cut outs found in papel amate, a handmade paper made from the inner bark of fig trees traditionally created in central Mexico. The cut paper often features figurative forms depicting spirits or deities enclosed within simple geometric shapes, mainly squares, rectangles, diamonds and triangles. The shapes and overall composition are framed by borders featuring smaller, repeating cuts of diamonds and triangles. Historically, papel amate cutouts were used by curanderos (traditional healers) in ritual practices. By referencing these motifs, the piteado patterns contained within the papel-amate-inspired compositions serve as symbolic vessels for healing.
